As you may have heard, IVA’s board of directors recently completed their search for a new management team. And I couldn’t be more honored and delighted that they selected our group to lead this organization into the upcoming season and beyond.
Thank you to those who have reached out to us with your encouragement—we’ve been overwhelmed by your support!
WHO WE ARE
I’m Jason Badell, the new CEO and commissioner, and I’ll be working in tandem with Mike Deaver, executive vice president, who will handle many of the association’s operational and marketing needs.
Mike and I have been involved with volleyball in this region since 1996. We’ve marketed and promoted collegiate volleyball for both men and women; worked on bids and hosting for the recent USA Volleyball regional and national events; and offered consulting for local, state, and national organizations. Above all, we love this sport and want to see the game grow to its fullest for both athletes and fans.
We also have three new executive board members who bring decades of business and management expertise to IVA:
Deirdre Hill is general manager of Datatix/Smith’sTix, Utah’s largest locally operated ticket distributor. In her 18 years at the company, she has directed ticketing and management for thousands of events, including all ticketing operations for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Rob Neilson is VP of business development for Volley Metrics. He was an associate head coach for BYU men’s volleyball for eight years and an assistant coach for the USA Volleyball boys’ national team during the 2011 season.
Tim Goalen is co-owner and COO of Rockwell Watches. He has spent eight years in operations, event management, marketing, and sponsorships for the company, working with all major sports leagues and events, including the Dew Tour, MotoX Tour, AMA Pro Racing, and other organizations.
WHY WE’RE HERE
Our top priority is serving you, the membership—clubs, players, parents, coaches, and officials—and helping you develop the best talent possible. We plan to focus on three vital activities: (1) Sponsor and promote competitions and tournaments across the region. (2) Educate and train coaches and officials through clinics, seminars, and other resources. (3) Develop players and coaches in the High Performance Programs for Beach and Indoor. To start, we’re planning a clinic for coaches and officials this fall, and we’ll launch a tournament schedule in January. We’re also updating IVA’s website and social media pages so you can more easily access the information you need.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We want to fill a number of positions on the advisory board for the coming year, including members to represent the following areas:
1. Professional league
2. Universities and colleges
4. Southern Utah
9. Diversity and equality in sports
We’ll announce the nomination and application process along with the deadline soon. The general membership will then vote on advisory board members. Watch your email for more details.
Thank you for your support and patience as we make this transition. We look forward to working with you this year and making it a spectacular season for volleyball in the Intermountain Region.
Please see posted board meeting minutes for Aug 2015.

Because USA Volleyball (USAV) and the Intermountain Volleyball Association (IVA), a Region of USA Volleyball, set the standards and specialize in volleyball 24/7, 365 days a year. USAV, and the IVA, are non-profit, non-government supported organizations, connected at all levels from the National Teams to the youngest and oldest age groups in indoor, sand, grass and Paralympic disciplines for both genders. No other organization is so totally invested in creating volleyball as a lifetime sport from top to bottom. USA Volleyball is the National Governing Body (NGB) in the United States for indoor and sand volleyball, the only organization so recognized by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB). College scholarships and Olympic dreams begin with USAV and their Regions, which has over 245,000 registered members, 12,000 teams and 5,000 clubs nationwide. Membership in USAV provides opportunities for teams from all 50 states to compete for the title of “National Champion.” Of which the IVA has over 3,000 region members.
Local, Regional and National Events Players have the opportunity to play in quality, exciting USAV sanctioned competitions – both indoor and sand – that are open only to USAV members. USAV hosts National Championship level events for girls’ and boys’ youth under age 18, along with elite qualifying tournaments into their gender-specific USAV Junior National Championships and Sand Nationals. With set standards for the quality of these events and accountability for those that run them. Tournament sanctioning provides players and clubs with added assurance. Many of our competitors cannot provide the assurance that you are playing in a sanctioned event held with highest standards.
Security, Safety and Background Checks USAV and its’ Regions provide extensive safety and security checks in which every coach, official, team representative, or club staff member that has contact with youth-level players is required to have a bi-annual background screening. USAV and the IVA are leaders in protecting young participants. We are the ONLY Volleyball organizations that have this as a requirement to protect the USAV/ IVA youth. We have set the highest standard of screening in the business. USAV sets standards for the Regions and events for facilities and is proactive in teaching safety issues to players, coaches, club directors, officials and event organizers to ensure the safest environment possible. USAV members benefit from having a comprehensive insurance package provided to them as part of their registration fees. This insurance package is one of the best in the industry, which includes sports accident, facility usage and assistance with Directors and Officers (D&O) for Clubs’ Board of Directors Coverage.
Parent Involvement Opportunities exist for parents to be involved in the Regional Volleyball Association governance structure and to make positive changes in the sport at the national level. Parents can also become active in the sport as scorekeepers, referees, coaches or even play in their own adult league. USAV provides parent outreach programming to better educate the entire family unit on the sport of volleyball and the impact USAV can provide to the athlete.
USA Volleyball Sets the Standards USAV sets the standards for governance and specifies that every region in the country meet specific criteria to remain in good standing USAV recommends sand and indoor rules standards for use by every other youth and adult volleyball organization in the United States. USAV is affiliated with other organizations like the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) supporting our combined efforts to support our mission.
Educational Opportunities for the Beginner to the Advanced Coach/Official All USAV / IVA junior coaches must complete minimum coaching education requirements through the USAV Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP). A state of the art, annually updated introductory level coaching clinic, called IMPACT, is delivered both locally by the RVAs and in national webinars. USAV has partnered with the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) to offer the next level of training with a new online course. Individuals within USAV / IVA have the opportunity to advance their coaching skills through the CAP program with modules taught by highly qualified coaches including members of the National Team coaching staffs. The annual USAV High Performance Coaches’ Clinic brings in the top coaches from across the United States and around the globe to expand the coaching curriculum. The IVA High Performance Program coaches have attended this clinic since its inception in order to add to the quality of the program. USAV / IVA CAP, Sports Medicine and High Performance programs have access to cutting-edge teaching methods, information and technology through its relationship with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) programs and other national federations. USAV / IVA develops high-quality referees and scorekeepers who must undergo certification training, creating a pool of regionally and nationally certified court officials. We are the only training organization with a program for officials in the sport of club volleyball.
Programming Benefits for USA Volleyball Members USAV members are eligible to try out for and participate on IVA Regional High Performance teams or National High Performance teams, including Team USA squads that compete internationally in zonal and World Championship events that are part of the Olympic pipeline. Members receive the quarterly, full-color magazine Volleyball USA. In addition the bi-weekly electronic newsletter “Rotations” is part of a wealth of news and information distributed to the public. Individuals can sign up for free email subscriptions by clicking here. USAV has an extensive awards program with categories for athletes, coaches, officials/scorekeepers, junior representatives, sports medicine and leaders for the sport.
Grassroots Development at Youth and Adult Levels USAV / IVA re-invests in the sport through financial support for under-represented populations including Starlings USA economically-disadvantaged clubs, boys’ youth/college men, military and a wealth of disabled programming. A huge amount of free grassroots sport development material is available on the USAV and IVA Web sites, including Best Practices and “How To” instructions designed for players, club directors, coaches, officials and parents for all levels.
We are the Future IVA has a full time office staff dedicated to club volleyball in the Intermountain Region. In addition to this highly specialized and available staff, USAV has a full-time Office staff, along with dedicated staffs and volunteers at all 40 of its Regional Offices. Both national and regional staffs deal with only indoor and sand volleyball – no other sport. This allows us to devote all of our time to Volleyball. Both the IVA and the USAV National Office are devoted to providing standardized governance and programming to grow and enhance the game. USAV holds regularly scheduled meetings between the National Office staff, Regional Volleyball Associations and Commission leaders to maintain the high level of quality members expect. THANK YOU!
USA Volleyball and the IVA would like to thank all of America, and especially those in our extended “Volleyball Family” for their support over the past years which led to our most recent history making performance in the 2008 Beijing Games. Three gold and two silver medals in our sport for the Olympic and Paralympic Games are the result of the Regions, Volleyball Clubs and USAV leadership working together with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committees to grow the game and sustain competitive excellence. We look forward to your participation in the years ahead.
The IVA www.imvolleyball.org is the place to start, but you can always contact USA Volleyball’s national office at 1-88USVOLLEY, or at email@example.com As with all things, you may find other options for volleyball, but nothing compares to the experience you will receive being involved with USAV / IVA. We encourage you to investigate and research the facts for yourself, and make sure you have the correct facts.
While sometimes it is difficult to compare apples to oranges. Here are a few questions that may help you decide: Is that representative truly involved with the organization they are representing, does the governing organization support that individuals or organization. Does the governing organization ensure that you receive what is promised? If you do not, what are your recourses? It is very important to know and understand all areas of what organization you choose. The ultimate goal is to always do what is best for the youth of Volleyball and give back to the volleyball community. We encourage you to compare USAV / IVA to all other volleyball organizations and we guarantee the best choice for a volleyball organization will be with the USAV / IVA.

Last season the Intermountain Volleyball Association along with several other USA Regions and USA Volleyball, established a Women’s Pro League. The Intermountain Womens Pro Team is known as the Utah Unity Team. The USA PVL is a grass roots professional volleyball league that is sanctioned by USA Volleyball. The league consists of teams from the 40 regions of USA Volleyball. Teams must be sanctioned by the region in order to participate in the league. Additional information about the league can be found on www.USAPVL.com. In 2012, the Utah Unity team attended the USA National Open Championship in Salt Lake City to participate in the Professional Division along with 12 other teams from different Regions. Doug Beal, CEO of USA volleyball is excited about announcing the men’s version of the League and is asking for support from the 40 Regions. This email is being sent to all Adult Men in the Intermountain Region to inquire if there is any interest with-in the region to establish a Men’s Team for the 2012/2013 Season. If you are interesting in playing, coaching or just helping out please email firstname.lastname@example.org of your intent. If we receive enough interest, the Intermountain Region will pursue the prospect of putting a team together. If you can get back to us by October 10th that would be helpful, this way we can get back to Doug Beal at USA Volleyball. If you have additional questions please email them to email@example.com and/or call the Intermountain office at 801-534-1933 between 9 and 5pm. However, most of your questions will be answered by going to www.USAPVL.com.
